This one is often trotted out in defense of quotes that have been misattributed to the Buddha. After all, if the Buddha himself said “Whatever is well said is a saying of the Blessed One” then any nice quote must be a “Buddha quote” as long as it’s “well said” — all you have to do is stick “The Buddha” on the end of it and it becomes automatically genuine, right?
Not so fast. First, this wasn’t said by the Buddha. Second, it doesn’t mean what you might think it does.
